electric dawn, a bubble finds the light,
it climbs the cold dim water, thin and slow,
and each new inch it takes it feels like flight,
as if the whole pond over it might glow.

It holds one breath it never meant to spend,
a little dark it brought up from the floor,
and each thin ray it touches it will bend,
the way a lens would bend it, little more.

It breaks. The pond does not record the sound.
A ring is sent out, widens, then is still,
and one held breath is suddenly unbound,
and rides the wind out over field and hill.

So little things lift through the dark and deep,
and break into the light they could not keep.
